April Ramirez, MPT
Owner of New Beginnings Physical Therapy
Welcome to NBPT! I am a physical therapist, specializing in pelvic and orthopedic health, here in the heart of South Pasadena, CA. I began my career in 1997 as a Physical Therapy Assistant, and further pursued my education, graduating as a Physical Therapist in 2003
(while pregnant with my first child!).
I'm a proud mother of 2 beautiful children - both vaginally delivered, after 26 hours and 19 hours labor, but not without episiotomies & epidurals.
I've been married to the love of my life, Luis Ramirez, since 2000. He is my biggest cheerleader, and loving life /business partner. Together we have shaped and created NBPT.
I'm also a cancer survivor (Acute T-cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia), in which I recieved 3 years of daily experimental chemotherapy, which was responsible for taking away full gross and fine motor skills, taste, hearing, vision, sensation, mobility, & continence. I required maximum assistance with bed mobility, toileting, balance and walking, and have sustained my own fair share of pelvic floor issues, including endometriosis & extensive scar tissue adhesions. As with so many of my patients (including cancer survivors, post partum, post-op, etc), when the pelvic floor function goes, it's a chain effect which compromises body mechanics, posture, core stability & change in quality of life.
I feel it's important for you to grasp a little bit of my personal life because in this field, it IS about personal life experiences that allow me to connect to my patients. Having personally experienced pregnancy, child bearing, pelvic & orthopedic dysfunctions and cancer, I have the distinct privilege to relate to my patients in a different forum than those who have not experienced these events. As a physical therapist, it is crucial to learn from text books. However, other pieces of knowledge have to be acquired through personal life experiences, and that's something a patient can look for in terms of connecting to their health care provider. My personal experiences provide me with a very unique insight to my patient's needs and it is what directs my plan of treatment.
To be frank, I love my job. I'm a nerd at heart - I love solving puzzles, and the art of physical therapy is just that. I truly look forward to waking up in the morning, going to work and providing my patients with the opportunity to create new beginnings.
